Koreaboo
The road to reunion is paved with awkward moments.
Hannah had every detail of her trip mapped out. Fly to Korea. Meet her birth mother. Spend a golden summer making unforgettable memories.
But once she lands in Seoul, reality quickly sets in. Her Umma works endless hours at a convenience store, barely stopping to breathe. She seems far more invested in stacking shelves and perfecting the garden gnome display than bonding with the Australian daughter she hasn’t seen in decades.
Hannah may be Korean by birth and Australian by upbringing, but to Umma she’s just a “Koreaboo” — a foreigner smitten with K-Pop, kimchi, and hanboks. With nothing but Google Translate and sheer optimism to guide her, Hannah must try to carve out a place in Umma’s world before the sweltering summer slips away.
Inspired by real events from Michelle Lim Davidson’s life (The Feather in the Web, The Newsreader), this touching and sharply observed play marks the writing debut of one of Australia’s most cherished performers. Michelle also steps into the spotlight, directed by Jessica Arthur (The Dictionary of Lost Words, The Shiralee), in a reunion story that spans continents, cultures, and Spotify playlists.
